June 27, 2022 – Freedom and Liberty Are the Order of the Day!

With Independence Day fast approaching in the United States, I've been spending more time lately thinking about freedom and, more specifically, an internal freedom (and deep satisfaction) that comes from ridding oneself of any and all old, unwanted, and/or forgotten "stuff" and gain more free space in the process. It's extremely liberating! The stuff I'm referring to could be as tangible as cleaning out an overstuffed closet, purging your wardrobe of any old clothes that either don't fit or will never come back in style...

But we need to keep in mind that it's not just physical possessions that "clutter" our lives. It's also the emotional baggage that we carry around with us. It could be a regret over a past relationship, a loss or disappointment of some kind, or feelings of insecurity, or fear of failure. This type of emotional "clutter" can weigh us down and keep us from growing.

That's what I've been thinking about decluttering our emotional space! Why not have a "decluttering" exercise for those old emotions and feelings that we continue to hold on to. I'm a big believer in the power of intention, so here's what I came up with... Find a quiet moment and sit down with a pen and paper. Write down all of the emotional clutter that you want to be free of. Next, spend a little time thinking about a symbol or image that represents that old feeling and draw it on the paper. Or you can even paste a picture from a magazine of something that represents your feeling. Then create your own ceremony to dispose of your paper now ladened with your emotional clutter. You could bury the paper, tear it into little pieces, take it to a dump, put it in a shredder, or burn it in a safe place.

However you decide to dispose of the paper, before you do, say aloud the following: "I am ready to let go of my feelings about…" and then finish the sentence with your own words. After the paper is gone, you can say "Good riddance" or "Good-bye" or "I am now free!" Hopefully you'll feel some sense of liberty or lightness. If you find later that you are still carrying unwanted feelings, and sometimes they can be very powerful, you can repeat the little ritual.

And please keep in mind, one way of releasing unwanted feelings or emotions is to replace them with new hopes or goals. Write them down on a piece of paper along with a picture or symbol of them, and place the paper in a place where you'll see it regularly. Seeing it should make you feel happy and, over time, you'll begin to notice a liberating feeling of freedom from those things that were weighing on you. I hope you'll try some emotional decluttering this week! Blessing always!
